On Sunday April 30, Hans Overvliet guided the group of participants through the streets of Middelburg, from Vleeshal Markt (meeting point), from the Helm to ruimte caesuur. Since Overvliet explores the role of a specific location in his work more often, he invited the participants to have a dialogue with him about his work – in Dutch or English – during the walk. The starting point for this dialogue is undoubtedly the title of this SYDGL #8: Unerreichbar Hautnah. This phrase accompanies Overvliet – literally – almost his entire life, as a tattoo on his arm. For him this sentence describes exactly what "distant suffering" means. "Unattainbly close" is the best translation of this phrase, but since it loses its double meaning (Haut – skin) in the translation, Overvliet prefers the German title. The dialogue continued at ruimtecaesuur where Overvliet's work was on view in the intimate setting of the library. This SYDGL #8 concluded with a drink and a musical refreshment by music(at)caesuur.*

Vleeshal is an internationally oriented center for contemporary art, rooted in Zeeland. In Zeeland Focus, Vleeshal highlights regional artists, takes part in and celebrates local contemporary art and culture.
For So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood, Vleeshal invited artists from Zeeland to take on the role of a compass and guide their audience to interesting and inspiring places in Zeeland. The title comes from the English translation of Patrick Modiano’s book Pour que tu ne te perds pas dans le quartier written in 2014, the year Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This series took place from 2015-2018.
