So You Don't Get Lost in the Neighborhood #7 | Broeder Dieleman

On Sunday the 26th of March, broeder Dieleman took the group of participants to the creeks of Zeeuws Vlaanderen.

Creeks are mysterious places, a narrow inlet of the sea where land and folklore come together. The creeks of Zeeuws Vlaanderen – imbued with mystery, history, nature and symbolism – are a perfect example of this, with stories of ghosts and other local lore lingering around them. For two years Dieleman has wandered this area, taking pictures, making movies, and writing music and texts to accompany these. As an artist, broeder Dieleman sees it as his duty to speak his own truth regarding the Zeeuws landscape and identity, in contrast to the identity of Zeeland that has been produced and marketed for tourism and industry purposes.

Series

Vleeshal is an internationally oriented center for contemporary art, rooted in Zeeland. In Zeeland Focus, Vleeshal highlights regional artists, takes part in and celebrates local contemporary art and culture.

For So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood, Vleeshal invited artists from Zeeland to take on the role of a compass and guide their audience to interesting and inspiring places in Zeeland. The title comes from the English translation of Patrick Modiano’s book Pour que tu ne te perds pas dans le quartier written in 2014, the year Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This series took place from 2015-2018.
