From April 20 to May 11, 2025, Vleeshal presented Blue Moon by Jae Pil Eun, a work inspired by Korean shamanistic practices in which drums were used to summon spirits. The installation, which included a large ceramic drum, was designed to be activated during performances, one of which took place during the performance program Stage Left at Vleeshal on April 19.
During these performances, deep, rhythmic sounds emerged—associated by the artist with the elements water, air, fire, and earth—which filled and resonated throughout the space. Throughout the exhibition of Blue Moon at Vleeshal, Jae Pil Eun worked on an audio piece based on the sounds from the performance. This sound work was eventually added to the installation.
During Blue Moon, the artist was often present to conduct research in Vleeshal for his upcoming solo exhibition Red Celebration, which opens on June 14, 2025. Visitors were warmly invited to view both the installation and the artist’s research, and to engage in conversation with the artist.
