This open call has been closed. New applications will not be processed.

Vleeshal Art Prize

Once every five years, Vleeshal awards the Vleeshal Art Prize to a promising artist from Middelburg. This artist wins not only a solo exhibition at Vleeshal, but also a close collaboration with a talented, external curator invited by Vleeshal. This time, curator and writer Martha Jager has been invited.

To compete for the Vleeshal Art Prize 2023, Middelburg artists can submit their portfolio and the special application form. The Vleeshal grant committee, consisting of Dagmar Dirkx, Maartje Korstanje and Arnisa Zeqo, will examine the portfolios together with Martha Jager. Eight artists will be selected for a studio visit by Jager. Following these studio visits, the winner will be chosen, who will work closely with Jager to develop a solo exhibition at Vleeshal. The studio visits will take place in November/December 2022.

Pieter Slagboom won the Vleeshal Art Prize in 2018, with Julia Geerlings serving as the external curator. The Vleeshal Art Prize 2013 went to Liesbeth Labeur, with Laurie Cluitmans as guest curator.

Your application for the Vleeshal Art Prize must be submitted by 24 October 2022. Digital submission of the application is our preference. The Vleeshal Art Prize show will take place in September 2023.

Subsidies for Middelburg artists

With the subsidy programme for Middelburg artists, Vleeshal (SBKM) stimulates artists who live or have their studios in Middelburg to start projects or explore ways to further develop their artistic practice. The objective of the foundation is to stimulate the Middelburg art climate. The grant scheme not only offers artists the opportunity to receive financial support for their work, but also to receive substantive feedback from 3 experts from the (inter)national art field.

Project grant

Vleeshal (SBKM) considers it of great importance to enable Middelburg artists to realise special projects. Eligible projects must be of demonstrable importance for the development of the oeuvre. A project is a time-limited activity with a clear concept and goal; it has a one-off character. An eligible project can take many forms, ranging from, for example, the creation of a special work to a working or study trip, from an exhibition to a publication. Artists can receive the following maximum amounts for a project grant, for a total project budget of:

< € 1.000 – 100%
€ 1.000 – € 1.333 – € 1.000
€ 1.334 – € 2.999 – 75%
€ 3.000 – € 4.449 – € 2.250
€ 4,500 – 50%, maximum € 3,400

Incentive grant

The artist is ready for a new development in his oeuvre, but does not yet have a well-defined plan. This grant is intended to give the artist the financial freedom for a certain period to concentrate fully on his/her work and try out new things. Artists can receive an amount of €750 per month, with a maximum of 3 months.

Procedure

Your application for the Middelburg artists’ grants must be submitted by 24 October 2022 at the latest. Digital submission of the application is our preference. The special application form and attachment (please submit in one pdf file) can be sent to adrienne@vleeshal.nl. Should you prefer to submit your application on paper, please bear in mind to submit the paper application form in quadruplicate, including any attachments. This can be sent to our new office at Simpelhuisstraat 7, 4331 PH, Middelburg.

Applications received after this date cannot be processed. We advise you to complete the form carefully. Incomplete applications without a portfolio will not be processed.
