During the Kinderkunstweek (art week for children), Vleeshal organized educational workshops alongside the exhibition The Directions by Hannah Black: ‘Tape your own path!’
The solo exhibition The Directions by Hannah Black showcased how she navigated life as a person, mother, and artist and which places played a role in her journey. The title of the exhibition referred to navigation and the directions one could take. Black explored how people moved through the world. What directions could they go in? What guided them along the way?
During the workshop 'Tape Your Own Path!', children were first guided through the exhibition at Vleeshal. The exhibition featured an installation in the form of a maze, where visitors could wander and encounter various elements along the way. The children were led through the maze by the instructor and received explanations about aspects of navigation and the importance of making choices.
After the tour, the children participated in a workshop on how to create graphics using tape. They worked on a project centered around the following questions: Who was their reference point in life? When they had to make a choice but were unsure, who could they turn to? When something happened that might not have been pleasant, who was there to help them?
In the second part of the workshop, the children worked on a large canvas. Statements were given, and the children made their own choices visible. They used tape to create paths based on the choices they made, determining the direction of their own tape-maze. The statements varied by age group but focused on everyday decisions, helping children become more aware that they were already making choices daily. The workshop highlighted that not everyone made the same choice, and that was okay.
By depicting all the individual choices in tape on a large canvas, a collective artwork was created that represented the choices of the class.
Series
Education is of great importance to Vleeshal. Its educational program accompanying the exhibitions is twofold. Firstly, for each child who visits the exhibition there is an educational assignment available at the counter. This assignment is based on the child's perception of the world. Secondly, Vleeshal organizes educational workshops for both primary school and secondary education. This workshop consists of a receptive part in which the schoolchildren or students view and discuss the exhibition, and a reflective part with a processing assignment.
