Accessibility
General Accessibility of the Vleeshal and Its Facilities
At the entrance of the Vleeshal there is a threshold of less than 2.5 cm high. On the right-hand side you will find the reception desk, where one of our visitor assistants will welcome you. The exterior doors of the Vleeshal are always open, which can make the entrance area colder during low temperatures. Inside the hall itself, the heating is turned on in cold weather.
Past the reception desk begins the exhibition space. This area is on one level, but as the floor consists of old tiles, there may be some unevenness. To reach the toilets, turn right upon entering the exhibition space and go up three steps through a heavy door that opens inward. For the men’s toilet, you then go down four steps; for the women’s toilet, there is a threshold to cross. Unfortunately, the Vleeshal does not have a wheelchair-accessible toilet and there is no baby changing table. Both facilities are available at Café Restaurant MarktCafé (80 metres from the Vleeshal).
Additional information:
- Companions are granted free admission
- Assistance dogs are allowed
- Large-print versions of the gallery texts are available at the reception desk
- Audio versions of the gallery texts can be accessed via a QR code at the reception desk
- Museum stools are available next to the desk for visitors to use during their visit to the exhibition
As the layout of our space changes with every exhibition, we recommend checking the page of the current exhibition before your visit. There you will find information about the physical accessibility of the exhibition and whether it contains explicit imagery, sounds, and/or other sensory stimuli. During your visit, our visitor assistants are available to answer your questions, provide more information about the exhibition, and offer assistance where needed. You can recognize them by the large “V” on their sweater or T-shirt.
For further questions about the accessibility of the space or the exhibition, please email ploen@vleeshal.nl.
Directions
By public transport
We encourage our visitors to visit the Vleeshal by public transport. Up-to-date travel information can be found on 9292.nl. The Vleeshal is a ten-minute walk or five-minute bike ride from Middelburg railway station. It is possible to rent bicycles via the OV-fiets system operated by the national railway service. Along the left side of Vleeshal, at the Helm, you will find the nearest bike stands.
By car
Along the access roads into the city center of Middelburg, you will find P-route signs. The P-route will show you a quick way to the various car parks and parking garages, which are open 24/7 all year round. The nearest parking lot to the Vleeshal is on Bodenplaats, where it is possible to pay with a bank card. The nearest disabled parking is also situated at this parking lot.
In the entire city center of Middelburg, you may park in the street however only within the marked parking spaces. Paid parking is in effect from Monday to Saturday from 8am until 8pm. Maximum parking time and parking rates vary per zone and are indicated on every parking ticket machine.
