Accessibility

Vleeshal wants to be a place where as many people as possible can experience contemporary art, in their own way and at their own pace. We are constantly working to make our spaces, programs, and communication more accessible, and we welcome feedback, questions, and suggestions.

Entrance and access

There is a small threshold at the entrance of Vleeshal. It is less than 2.5 cm (about 1 inch) high. The front desk is located to the right of the entrance, where a visitor guide will welcome you.

The outer doors of Vleeshal are usually open. Because of this, it can feel cold near the entrance when it is cold outside. The heating is on in the exhibition space when needed.

After the front desk, you enter the exhibition space. This space has no stairs. However, the floor has old tiles, so it is not completely flat.

The building has no elevator. The restrooms can only be reached by stairs.

During a sensory-friendly opening, you enter through the main entrance. Outside, in the Vleeshal courtyard, there is a quiet spot. In bad weather, this spot cannot be used. More information about the sensory-friendly opening is provided further below.

Wheelchair access

You can enter the exhibition space with a wheelchair. Other areas, such as the restrooms, are currently not wheelchair accessible. Read more about this under "Restrooms."

Restrooms

From the exhibition space, turn right, then walk up three steps. After that, go through a heavy door. This door opens inward.

Looking for the men's restroom? Walk down four more steps. The women's restroom is located behind a small threshold.

Vleeshal does not have a wheelchair accessible restroom, and there is no diaper changing table. Both are available at Restaurant MarktCafé, located about 80 meters (roughly 260 feet) from Vleeshal.

Seating

Near the front desk is a small area with a table and two benches where you can sit. There are sometimes seating spots in the exhibition itself as well, depending on the exhibition.

Museum chairs are located next to the front desk. You are welcome to bring one along during your visit.

Sensory-friendly offer

Vleeshal occasionally organizes a sensory-friendly opening for visitors who prefer a calm and predictable environment. During this opening, sensory stimuli are kept to a minimum.

Date of the next sensory-friendly opening: August 16, 2026, from 09:30 am to 11:00 am.

During this opening, we do the following:

• We turn off sound and background music.
• We make the lighting calmer.
• We reduce bright light, reflections, and flickering images.
• At the front desk, you can borrow earplugs, sunglasses, or noise-canceling headphones.
• A sensory map (a floor plan of the exhibition) is available at the front desk. You can also download it below.
• Before your visit, you can view an online visual preparation guide. See the link below.

Quiet space

Vleeshal does not have a fixed quiet space. However, there are a few spots in and around the building that can be used as a quiet space.

During the sensory-friendly opening, you enter through the main entrance. The quiet spot is then outside, in the Vleeshal courtyard. In bad weather, you cannot sit there; instead, you can use the chairs in the reception area.

• Companions receive free admission.
• Guide dogs and assistance dogs are welcome.
• Large-print wall texts are available at the front desk. You can also listen to the wall texts by scanning the QR code at the front desk.
• Each exhibition uses the space differently, so please review the visual preparation guide beforehand. There you can read about the accessibility of the current exhibition, as well as possible sensory stimuli such as explicit images, sound, darkness, or bright light.
• During your visit, our visitor guides are happy to help. They answer questions and share more about the exhibition. You can recognize them by the large V on their sweater or T-shirt.

By public transport

We encourage our visitors to visit the Vleeshal by public transport. Up-to-date travel information can be found on 9292.nl. The Vleeshal is a ten-minute walk or five-minute bike ride from Middelburg railway station. It is possible to rent bicycles via the OV-fiets system operated by the national railway service. Along the left side of Vleeshal, at the Helm, you will find the nearest bike stands.

By car

Along the access roads into the city center of Middelburg, you will find P-route signs. The P-route will show you a quick way to the various car parks and parking garages, which are open 24/7 all year round. The nearest parking lot to the Vleeshal is on Bodenplaats, where it is possible to pay with a bank card. The nearest disabled parking is also situated at this parking lot.

In the entire city center of Middelburg, you may park in the street however only within the marked parking spaces. Paid parking is in effect from Monday to Saturday from 8am until 8pm. Maximum parking time and parking rates vary per zone and are indicated on every parking ticket machine.
