With the film I Call Her Mammu by Emma Jääskeläinen, we started our new series Vleeshal Video, for which we select regularly changing videos in connection with our ongoing projects in Middelburg and beyond.

In line with our existing experimental program, we want to spark surprise and reflection using a space that is familiar to you: the digital realm. Vleeshal Video gives us the chance to experiment with an online program and gives you the opportunity to enjoy a Vleeshal program without the need to travel.

The first video of Vleeshal Video was I Call Her Mammu by Emma Jääskeläinen; the familial connection it depicts fits seamlessly with her solo exhibition Slo Mo Mother which was part of the Vleeshal program of 2023. In the video piece the artist wraps her grandmother (mummi or mummo in Finnish) in wool as an extra layer of protection. It is an intimate videoportrait of a woman and her body - that has lived through several decades - carefully wrapped by her granddaughter. We hear the moving words of Jääskeläinen's grandmother in the background, who reflects on the footage of herself and Jääskeläinen.

The film was on view from June 28 until July 17, 2023.
