During Art Rotterdam 2016 Vleeshal presented The Oceans Academy of Arts (OAOA) with works by Özlem Altin, Soucis & Jasmins, Ola Vasiljeva and Marianne Vierø.

OAOA functions as an experimental platform under the umbrella of contemporary art. This semi-fictional collective takes on the roles of artists, artworks, curators, teachers and students whenever appropriate.

Commissioned by Vleeshal, OAOA created an installation especially for Art Rotterdam's Intersections which departed from the short story Symbols and Signs (1948) by Vladimir Nabokov. This story is famous for its unusual composition, in which a second story is encoded behind the superficial semitransparent one. The story is full of things not said and the silences here are larger and more eloquent than words. OAOA embraces such silences and creates a stage for them.

Series

In 2015 Vleeshal kicked of its Nomadic Program, as an extension of its existing exhibition program in Middelburg. In its Nomadic Program Vleeshal goes on tour, organising exhibitions and other events in collaboration with venues in the Netherlands and abroad, such as Art Rotterdam, Amsterdam Art Weekend, the Spring Performance Festival, WIELS Art Book Fair, Brussels and Poppositions, Brussels.

This project was made possible by the generous support of the Mondriaan Fund and the municipality of Middelburg.
