The Root Cellar
Ida Ekblad
Solo exhibition
3 November – 15 December 2013
Vleeshal (Map)
Curator: Lorenzo Benedetti
Ida Ekblad has realised a solo exhibition in the Netherlands for the first time. The project, originally conceived together with the Oslo National Museum and the Kunstmuseum in Luzern, shows recent and new works made by Ekblad, as well as some created specifically for the environment of the Vleeshal.
The exhibition at Vleeshal allows Ekblad to realise a new body of work. Fundamental is her interest in the historical perspective that is a central element of our time. References to modernistic movements like Cobra or Informal are mixed with a contemporary attitude. Her work is framed in a new wave of sculpture that is becoming more and more central in the artistic discourse. This deepness in the contemporary context is a central research of the Norwegian artist. Through combining historical perspective in a contemporary cultural and social element, Ekblad gives an answer to the superficial connotation of a contemporary society based on speed and consumption. The use of discarded material to realise assemblage is a translation of the recuperation of the element of history to embrace a more complex relationship between art and time.
THE ROOT CELLAR
Cast into stale barrel, loaded on ship that never reached shore
Poor Georgie Midaidokoro ! Uh, wha wha
A filibuster clad in embroidered uchikake, plain red kimono
and pure white juban
Spume crusted on her collar. She is large hole dug into ground,
aligned with rocks. Yellow mist floating around.
Slivered voice in high seas throttling fossilized ballads of
‘Long before the old refrigerator was sold, almost everyone
owned a root cellar’
Widower screamed for 15 minutes but then froze,
the harvest shall be decomposed
Her face plain dirt, potatoes and squash.
Yearning for apples, turnips, carrots. Salt briny water,
crustaceans feeding on shopping-carts and uttermost
To sink without a trace
