Exhibition overview | Splendid Isolation | Wim Riemens

Under the title 'Splendid Isolation', a selection of the documentary pictures made by Wim Riemens (1933-1995) in the 1970s and 1980s is displayed in the Vleeshal. These are solely pictures of artistic events and exhibitions organized under the name 'Youth and Music' and 'Festival New Music', Forum and the Vleeshal.

The fact that these events took place in Middelburg is, of course, primarily due to the entrepreneurs' motivation and perseverance. In addition, the location and character of the city played an important role: a city with a rich cultural past, rested in the tranquility and isolation of the islands. That undoubtedly contributed to the events being extraordinary, informal and simultaneously high-quality, allowing them to shine.
