So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood #1 | Dave Meijer

Dave Meijer was the first artist invited by Vleeshal for the So You Don't Get Lost in the Neighbourhood series. He took all the participants to the Watertoren in Goes, to experience the utmost concentration that drives him in creating new paintings. While Entartete Wörter penetrated everyone's mind, the water tower offered a unique view of the landscape. The architectural spatiality of this landscape is the major theme of Meijer's work.

After the water tower, the group went to Meijer's studio: a black box, with no windows. At first glance, the paintings inside resembled geometric representations and did not immediately remind us of landscapes. On closer look, the black box and the landscape everyone experienced earlier turned out to be recurring elements that continued to fascinate.

Series

Vleeshal is an internationally oriented center for contemporary art, rooted in Zeeland. In Zeeland Focus, Vleeshal highlights regional artists, takes part in and celebrates local contemporary art and culture.

For So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood, Vleeshal invited artists from Zeeland to take on the role of a compass and guide their audience to interesting and inspiring places in Zeeland. The title comes from the English translation of Patrick Modiano’s book Pour que tu ne te perds pas dans le quartier written in 2014, the year Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This series took place from 2015-2018.
