Careful Sounds and Floral Hummings
Han Le Han, Houaïda Goulli
Residency
22 – 25 June 2022
The Museum of Loss and Renewal
Curators: Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Thiago de Paula Souza

During their residency at the Museum of Loss and Renewal in Collemacchia, Han Le Han and Houaïda Goulli investigated ways to unite the media of sound (which Houaïda often works with) and floral arrangement (which Han Le often works with). The notion of care underpinned this joint research.
With its ecologically rich environment, the Museum of Loss and Renewal was the perfect place to carry out this research. The project Careful Sounds and Floral Hummings is an exploration of sound and floral art as expressions of care. In an attempt to link their respective mediums into a collaborative practice, Houaïda and Han Le contemplate on the interconnectedness of personal, ancestral and ecological rituals of 'caring', and how, in the words of Emanuele Coccia, '[t]o live is essentially to live the life of another'.

Series
How do we learn to love each other while we are embattled on so many fronts? is a series developed by Vleeshal's nomadic curators for 2022-2023 Nomaduma Rosa Masilela and Thiago de Paula Souza.
The title for this series is borrowed from Audre Lorde, writer and activist, who penned this question in 1984 in a journal entry written while she was living in Berlin, during which time she asked a litany of incisive existential questions about finding meaning in the face of uncertainty, despair, and psychic and physical vulnerability. Nomaduma and Thiago articulate their nomadic program of 2022-2023 around this question. The devotion of Audre Lorde to create international feminist political networks of camaraderie reflects the core concerns of their program. Nomaduma and Thiago similarly ask questions of how does one teach or share, how does one survive, how does one empower others, how does one fight, how does one repair, how does one nourish, as the core foundations of their collaborative curatorial practice.
