Film Screening | Iagor Peres, Gê Viana

On July 16th the Brazilian artist duo Gê Viana & Iagor Peres were invited to show at Cinema Middelburg the film commissioned by Vleeshal’s nomadic curators.

The film was introduced via pre-recorded video by Gê Viana. Iagor Peres, who was present shared more details about their research period. After the screening we concluded the afternoon with a Q&A with Peres and Nomaduma Rosa Masilela and Thiago de Paula Souza.

Alongside Gê Viana & Iagor Peres, Davi Pontes & Juliana dos Santos also developed an experimental film within the framework of Vleeshal's international nomadic program. This collaboration resulted in a video installation.

Both films were shown in December 2022 at Pivô - Art & Research in São Paulo, Brazil and are the result of long-term research by the two artist duos that took place in dialogue with Nomaduma Rosa Masilela and Thiago de Paula, the curators of the international nomadic program 2022-2023. Themes of the research and films were collective experiences, the confluence of tradition and contemporary art.

Only Gê Viana & Iagor Peres' film was screened, as Pontes and dos Santos' film can only be screened as a multi-channel installation.

Series

How do we learn to love each other while we are embattled on so many fronts? is a series developed by Vleeshal's nomadic curators for 2022-2023 Nomaduma Rosa Masilela and Thiago de Paula Souza.

The title for this series is borrowed from Audre Lorde, writer and activist, who penned this question in 1984 in a journal entry written while she was living in Berlin, during which time she asked a litany of incisive existential questions about finding meaning in the face of uncertainty, despair, and psychic and physical vulnerability. Nomaduma and Thiago articulate their nomadic program of 2022-2023 around this question. The devotion of Audre Lorde to create international feminist political networks of camaraderie reflects the core concerns of their program. Nomaduma and Thiago similarly ask questions of how does one teach or share, how does one survive, how does one empower others, how does one fight, how does one repair, how does one nourish, as the core foundations of their collaborative curatorial practice.
