Excursion, Bike tour
Sunday 28 May 2017
12 – 3 pm
On Sunday May 28, father and daughter Bert and Lysandre Begijn guided the participants of this excursion by bike through the polder landscape surrounding De Braakman and rural churches in the area adjacent to the Belgian border. For the artists – who both maintain their own artistic practice – the desolate landscape of Zeeland is fundamentally tied to their works of art: the clerical architecture, the spiritual atmosphere and landscape repeatedly return as subject, although father and daughter greatly vary in their approach of these topics.
During the bike tour Bert and Lystrande Begijn stopped at various sites to talk about their work in relation to the surrounding landscape. The tour started at 14:00 at the meeting point in Waterlandkerkje. From Waterlandkerkje the tour took the participants to Waterland Oudeman and via Sint Jan in Eremo to Sint Margriete. In ‘t Oud Gemeentehuis there was a short break to enjoy a cup of coffee or a local beer. After the break the group returned by bike to the meeting point in Waterlandkerkje.
Vleeshal is an internationally oriented center for contemporary art, rooted in Zeeland. In Zeeland Focus, Vleeshal highlights regional artists, takes part in and celebrates local contemporary art and culture.
For So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood Vleeshal invited artists from Zeeland to take on the role of a compass and guide their audience to interesting and inspiring places in Zeeland. The title comes from the English translation of Patrick Modiano’s book Pour que tu ne te perds pas dans le quartier written in 2014, the year Modiano won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This series took place from 2015-2018.
