On December 17, Vleeshal welcomed a special guest production: the Oberufer Nativity and Shepherd play. This annual event is performed by a group of volunteers at various locations in Middelburg. In 2024, Vleeshal offered them our unique gothic space on the Market Square to perform their play.
The Oberufer Nativity and Shepherds' Play has a rich history dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. During this time, farmers from the region around Lake Constance (now on the border of Germany and Switzerland) migrated eastwards, eventually settling in areas such as the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary, including the village of Oberufer. In this isolated environment, these German-speaking immigrants preserved their language and cultural traditions for generations.
Among these traditions were centuries-old nativity plays that have remained almost unchanged over time. Performed by a cast of eleven, the plays brought the nativity story to life.
At a time when literacy was rare, these plays provided a vivid and communal way of experiencing the Christmas story. Although times have changed, the Oberufer nativity plays continue to thrive thanks to dedicated volunteer groups around the world. In Zeeland, too, a passionate team works to keep this heritage alive, and you are warmly invited to experience this unique tradition in Vleeshal.
