Join the workshop, Renew Your Scales! at Vleeshal with your class or after-school group during the exhibition Red Celebration by Jae Pil Eun.

Visit the exhibition Red Celebration by Jae Pil Eun with your group and discover how, just like a snake, you can show new sides of yourself again and again!

In his solo exhibition Red Celebration, Jae Pil Eun explores ways of living in close connection with the earth. In his work, he investigates rituals that are no longer practiced, often drawing inspiration from mythology. In the exhibition at Vleeshal, he uses the figure of the snake, a creatura that symbolizes renewal and transformation through shedding its skin.

During the workshop, Renew Your Scales!, children will be guided through the exhibition at Vleeshal, where they encounter two large ceramic snakes on the floor. The guide leads them through the space and explains themes of renewal, transformation, and the relationship between humans, animals, and the earth.

After the tour, the students participate in a cardboarding workshop, where they learn to create artworks using cardboard. Each child makes a large “scale” centered around the theme of renewal. They are asked: “If you were a snake and could let go of certain things, what would you choose?” and “Which parts of yourself would you want to show in your new scales?” The children use recycled cardboard to emphasize the transformation of themselves, but also of old materials into new art.

During this workshop, children learn that humans, like snakes, are constantly changing through growth, life experiences, and learning new things. These changes can be a little scary, but they always bring something beautiful in return.

In the final weekend of the exhibition, all the scales created by the children will be assembled into one large collective artwork: a scaly creature full of renewal and release. This artwork will be on display on September 7, during the Children’s Art Exhibition, where all children, along with their families, friends, and neighbors, are welcome to visit for free.

Series

Education is of great importance to Vleeshal. Its educational program accompanying the exhibitions is twofold. Firstly, for each child who visits the exhibition there is an educational assignment available at the counter. This assignment is based on the child's perception of the world. Secondly, Vleeshal organizes educational workshops for both primary school and secondary education. This workshop consists of a receptive part in which the schoolchildren or students view and discuss the exhibition, and a reflective part with a processing assignment.
